Not at all. But denial is a powerful force, especially when someone is confronted with situations involving sexual perversion. Yet many people looking on from a distance go straight to the blame game.

This is a nice little insight into how monsters like this are able to continue to prey on victims. What the hell were these parents thinking? It's amazing how many grown adults knew about him molesting children, their OWN children, but refused to go to law enforcement.

Yes, if I find out my daughter is getting molested by some perv down the street, I'm going to simply call him and say, "Hey you, don't do that anymore, ya hear?".

Feel so sorry for these children.

I'm going to quote this post, first of course for posterity. But second, because it's an incredibly important point to make if anyone here is going to be writing about Bill Conlin in the near-future.

If you do find yourself writing about Conlin, or someone at your publication is, please get the above facts straight. Everything inthesuburbs wrote is accurate.

Bill Conlin is a Spink Award winner. That's it. And by "it", I mean the highest honor a baseball writer can receive. But that's what he is -- a Spink Award winner, not a Hall of Famer, not elected to or enshrined in the Hall of Fame, not in the nonexistent "writers' wing" of the Hall of Fame.

(He also may be a lot of other things. But you get my point.)

Exactly, the only writer in the HOF is Henry Chadwick. And if I were the BBWAA, I would rethink that statement, which is, at the very least I think, inappropriate in tone at this time.

That's interesting to know, because I think a lot of people think there is some wing there where guys like Gammons, McCoy, Ringolsby etc... are honored. The stories have always made it seem that way...

  6. It was always made abundantly clear in the program given out during the HOF ceremonies that the winners of the J.G. Taylor Spink and Ford C. Frick awards are not members of the Baseball Hall of Fame. But that hasn't stopped the newspapers or broadcasters for whom they wrote from saying something like, "Conlin Enters The Hall."

Different era. For as much as many long for the good ol' days, it was awful in many ways. "Mad Men" has done a good job portraying some of that.

We're talking about an era when standard police protocol, nationally, in a domestic violence situation was that it was a "family matter." They were instructed to stabilize the situation, then leave.

It sickens you that the allegations have come out, or that the incidents allegedly occurred?

In other words, are you wishing it had stayed quiet?

I don't know how to respond to your question. I don't know if you're trying to be a smart ass about a very serious allegation or just trying to pull my chain for a reaction.
I am sickened that this, if true, ever occurred. I am also sicked to learn that it involves someone that I've known and respected as a journalist.
Let's say, for arguments sake, the allegations are proven false. Conlin will forever be remembered by many as a pervert.
If the allegations are true, he will never go to trial.
If you know how to pray, pray all involved.

That's a little more clear - you originally said you were sickened this came out. Not quite as clear. And, no, I'm not trying to be a smartass on a very serious thread. I also know how to pray - and I don't think prayer does much good at this point. Like SF in an earlier post, this hits a little closer to home than I'd like. Prayer doesn't do shit.

Moddy, I don't know how you could have been confused but that's not a big deal. I'll also defer debating about the merits of prayer. I believe in its power.
The one guy in this whole incident who is on a hot seat is Larry Platt. I found the following text very interesting.
"I simply do not know how to reconcile what I've read with the man I know. I spoke to him Tuesday. He offered to retire and I immediately accepted. I knew I'd never be comfortable running his byline again.
For a long time Tuesday, we struggled with how to best acknowledge this story without knowing the facts or reporting on it ourselves. It is a strange and sad time in the newsroom, and we will do our best to cover this as if it were any other high-profile figure in Philadelphia. But of course it is not just another high-profile figure in Philadelphia.
Conlin has been synonymous with this paper for five decades, and to pretend that we know how to approach a story like this is to insult your intelligence. All I can promise you is that we will attempt to be as thorough and fair as we can possibly be - not just to the facts of the story - but also to you, our readers. And that means being as open and transparent as we can be.
Since this is such uncharted territory, I don't know precisely what that will look like. I do know this: This is a tragedy. It's tragic for the victims, for Conlin's family, for the family of the Daily News, but also for the familial relationship we have with our readers. Like me, you've grown up with and trusted Conlin's bellowing voice. Now that trust is compromised by horrific allegations."
For some people in Philadelphia, this is like finding out there's no Santa Claus or Tooth Fairy. Conlin was a beloved figure to many.
Again, this is an extremely tragic situation.

The Sporting News ("Hall of Fame baseball writer Bill Conlin retires amid child ..."), Philly.com ("Three women and a man say they were molested as children by Bill Conlin, a Hall of Fame baseball writer and Philadelphia Daily News..." and Newsday (" Bill Conlin, Hall of Fame baseball writer, accused of sex abuse...") haven't made the distinction clear.
