Kines' use of timeouts at the end proved why he's not getting any run for the job. The announcers thought he let too much time run before calling the first one. but let him off the hook for calling two freeze the kicker TO, leaving him with none for the change of possession after the kickoff, forcing the rugby game with the kickoff.
Too bad - we have too many corporate coaches already, and could use a fun guy like Kines.

Oh the land of good times it was covering that Kines post-game presser. Here's a top 10:

    10. Refusal to sit down.
    9. Refusal to speak into the mic (which drove the TV guys insane)
    8. Pacing back and forth
    7. The comparisons of himself to Moses
    6. The story of the silver mine
    5. The folksy way he put his foot up on top of the table and leaned against his knee towards the end
    4. The obligatory made up school name that he doesn't want to coach at (East Idaho State Teacher's College, defensive ends)
    3. The tears
    2. The part where the mic got hot and the hissing noise started, causing Kines to hand it back to the PR guy and say "I don't need this."
    1. The genuine nature of the whole affair.

This was perhaps my favorite press conference of all time.

  3. Since you brought it up, how do you do this? Get in touch with the local airport? Is it on the Internet somewhere?

The Indy Bowl MVP - Dantrell Savage - came to Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College and played under Steve Campbell.
He earned postseason honors and earned a scholly to OSU.
    Campbell evaluates talent really well.
Bama reporters, or Mal himself, should as Dantrell about his former head coach at MGCCC

I think Joe Kines might be my favorite coach of all time.

    He's just so ... genuine.

I'm not going through all nine pages to see if his name has been brought up, but if I'm Alabama, I'd consider making a run at UK assistant coach Joker Phillips.

    A) He's a very strong recruiter
    B) He knows how to run an offense -- he's one of the reasons why Andre Woodson was the SEC's best QB this season
    C) He makes up for slighting Sylvester Croom a few years ago
    D) Rich Brooks just got an extension, meaning he'll be around for at least 2-3 more years

Yes, Joker has no head coaching experience, but who are you going to get right now that has that and would still be considered a decent hire.

Imagine the indignation in Bama Nation if they hired an ASSISTANT coach from UK.

Damn that would be a hoot.

He's good enough to be a D I-A head coach right now. And by hiring an assistant, he can come in with some slightly less ridiculous expectations than an experienced head coach.

I was told tonight that the plane was there in Fayetteville but it had nothing to do with the coaching search.
Apparently, and maybe this is a big deal for the 'Bama folk, Alabama signed a contract with a company in Fayetteville that does stadium cleanup, among other things to do with trash.
    Company is called Waste Management.
Even if isn't a big deal; it still might make for a funny story.

    Garbage, pure garbage
    Coaching search continues for 'Bama
    By Jay Farrar
It was a hot topic on Arkansas message boards.
Reports were coming in that Bear Force One; the official plane for the Crimson Tide was spotted in Fayetteville. And on the same day that Arkansas coach Houston Nutt cancelled practice. This led to widespread speculation that Alabama was courting Nutt despite his recent contract extension and as his team prepares for the Capitol One Bowl in Orlando.
A quick check of the Federal Aviation Administration's Web site does confirm that N75TP, a plane registered to Crimson Excel LLC in Delaware and used by the University of Alabama was indeed in Arkansas on Dec. 28.
As a matter of fact the plane, a Cessna Turbo-Fan, was all over Arkansas that day with stops in Little Rock, Fort Smith, Springdale and Texarkana.
So score one for the Internet fanatics who track planes, but was the plane toting athletic department personnel?
That, indeed, turns out to be true as well, but appearances can be deceiving.
    Really, really deceiving.
Turns out Alabama wasn't turning over stones in Arkansas looking for a coach, and it turns out the Tide were looking for a new garbage man.
    Garbage man?
Yep, specifically Waste Management of Tontitown, Ark., the same company that cleans Reynolds Razorback Stadium, among other facilities at Arkansas and around the country.
Insert quote for Alabama AD here to confirm and somebody is good to go.
Yet another Internet rumor that is pure garbage on closer examination.
