Never mind the '30s and '40s, what about the pogroms of the 1800s through World War I?

The reasons that Jews were persecuted and killed was in part due to their economic success. I would bet the Jews who survived had higher educational and more marketable skills on average than most of the citizens of the societies they lived in. I don't think that the same could be said of blacks in the United States in the 1930's.

    OK.

Why do blacks lag behind then?

Why do white trash hillbillies lag behind?

A handful of reasons have been offered. Among those was that many times they get scorned by their peers for trying to succeed. That's something unseen among other groups.

But your only response to these answers is, "OK, but why is THAT the case then?" An endless series of questions while ignoring the answers that have come your way. Ain't playing this game anymore.

Is the whole "white rednecks in 'Appalachia' are dumb too, therefore racism doesn't exist" thing really a thing now?

No, but the pathologies of those cohorts sure are similar. Given that, one naturally wonders how salient the slavery/Jim Crow influence is in today's world.

It's more of a "these people are struggling, too, and we KNOW it's not because of racism; therefore, racism doesn't have to be the default reason why some group is struggling."

If we stipulate that racism exists, we also can stipulate that it IS the reason some people are struggling.

Despite what Dick Whitman says, there can be many reasons for the struggles of a given population. We're fools if we can't recognize that racism isn't one of those reasons far too often.

Why did that attitude - being scorned by peers for trying to succeed - come about? Why is it endemic to a particular race in a particular nation?

You are nothing if not predictable.
