Why are Asian-Americans so successful in America?

Is it wrong that I am entertained by this continual chumming of the water, followed by several taking the bait, again and again?

    I lean heavily toward no.

DW's right to point out the tendency for people to belittle others' attempts to move up the ladder. He's wrong to attribute it exclusively, or even primarily, to poverty.

I invite everyone to think back and identify where in their families' history someone really worked hard and made a better place for the next generation. I'm confident its not going to be too hard to locate. Now think about whether or not that success has dissipated or has been sustained.

See edited version. I meant to say "driven to WANT TO succeed."

    My bad.

Well, I will credit BTE with pegging your act on this thread perfectly:

My suspicion, Dick, is what you've actually been trying to do for 13 pages is goad somebody into saying something racist or reprehensible that you can jump on top of, and you're now frustrated that nobody has taken the bait.

But I will give you credit for successfully muddying the waters and confusing the topic. Folks, you might take a look at the NYT article that was the basis for this thread. This shouldve been a discussion primarily about why one group--Asian Americans--is doing better than the rest of us. Not why another is doing worse.

The excerpt posted by the OP specifically compared Asian- and African-Americans.

The inherent racism of the dominant American ethnicity (white) has hampered African-Americans. Even with the push for equality under the law, AAs still face a hidden racism that often keeps them from reaching their potential. Racism is real in America.

It would also help if the cops would ease up on the trigger just a tad. Just sayin'.

One has to scour message boards far and wide to find quality analysis like that. It cuts right to the problem, cites substantive, non-stereotypical examples, and presents a useful solution or alternative.

    Great contribution.
