Why do decent threads turn into p*ssing matches?

The worst example I can find of a pissing match on the internet:

So this may not cut down on the locked threads and pissing matches, but it would maybe better organize where you can expect to see them.

I'll never get why a thread about Obama's flag lapel or a thread about how everybody supposedly in the media treats Hillary so horrible is in the same forum as the thread about the Preakness or Charles Barkley's gambling debt.
If I were new to this site looking for some decent sports conversations, today for example I'd have to wade through a majority of threads that have nothing to do with sports just to find the baseball thread, or the NBA thread or the soccer thread.
Split up the politics into it's own subcategory, maybe not permanently, but at least while the election cycle lasts. That way it would make it easier for people to find what they're looking for.

It might require another moderator, though, but I'm sure the mod from the anything goes thread or one of the other threads could moonlight as the "Politics" thread moderator.

And then that way if you want to avoid the pissing matches that undoubtedly come from certain threads, you can just avoid that main section if you so wish.

Just started to read through this, because I have been busy all day. Thank you, Chris. This is a point I have tried to make over and over again and I have felt as if I have often gotten ridiculed for it. There are a few people I go at it with on here, and I make a strong effort not to be insulting or to cross certain lines. It is VERY difficult, because of the insults and put downs I have seen people try to level at me. And this includes some posters who I think are pretty intelligent, add something to the board and whom I once respected -- except they feel emboldened on here to be mean-spirited. It has culminated with people telling me not to be so sensitive or in one case "to grow a sack." That isn't the point. In person, I can give and take with anyone and that can be really fun. And is not that I am personally sitting here bawling my eyes out because someone called me a name. It's that it gives the board a toxic feel, in my opinion, and I think this has been borne out by some posters who I don't think are particularly intelligent or add a lot who just weigh in constantly with one or two lines out of the blue making insulting, moronic posts.

I can say that this has been something Webby cares about and it has been a topic of discussion among the people moderating he various boards. It also gets tiring when it is the same small handful of people who ruin threads over and over again. And they have been getting a relatively free pass. We go in and delete or lock threads and life goes on. But that might not continue.

In any case, I really appreciated your post and your attitude, Chris. And it's kind of been my attitude here, too. If you wouldn't say it to my face, why would you type it here? And if you are the type of person who says some of the things I have seen typed here to people's faces, you're actually not the kind of person who is welcome here.

Again, just my .02. And before anyone tries to make THIS into a pissing match, and trying to make me or anyone else into an issue, please take a step back and realize I am not calling out anyone in particular. This was a generalized post. I do have certain people in mind... but I don't want this thread degrading too, with name calling and people feeling as if they have to defend themselves.

I think the point I was going for was that 8 out of 200 sounds inconsequential, but if those eight are responsible for an outsize chunk of the activity, then it IS an issue, or at least more of one than 8-out-of-200 makes it out to be.

I was also going to say was that in my newsroom now, most of the people there are either younger or older. So coming here lets me interact with people in my demographic, some of whom are even bigger nerds than me.
I've also gotten some good story ideas and direction. Plus, I've learned handy new catch phrases like, "full of fail" and such.

Not even sure how to respond to the original post. It's wrong. The board has attracted more poeple and with that has come some bullshit and a few toxic posters. It isn't a moderating problem, it is a growth problem.

Even with that, this board is not over-moderated. I can speak for myself. I do not do much locking or deleting. I barely touch Anything Goes. I will PM someone and try to get them to relax before I go in and do anything draconian.

I have an incredibly high threshold and take the attitude that Anything Goes gets a longer leash. 90 percent of the time, I will PM the person and explain myself and just ask them to be cool. And most of those people ARE. I understand that people lose themselves, have personal animosities with others that they allow to get the best of them, etc. Most of the people on here are not complete jerks who don't take a step back and realize it when you point it out. There are a few people, though, who are that rabid. Some might yes you and then go on acting like a jerk--on thread after thread. And some are just belligerent. Again, I haven't had too many experiences like this, because I barely touch the board. At first I would PM anyone who was crossing a line and explain myself. When it is the same small handful of people, I stopped bothering. I just delete posts or lock a thread (and I do so little of this) and even have one or two people on PM ignore because they are such pains in the ass.

Same here. I used to not post much. Then I changed my work situation so I spend a lot of time alone... in an office by myself. And I go through periods during which I am working a ton of hours. This board does me a world of good.

The thing is, it's a message board. It's not real life.

There are no actual "conversations" going on, but there sure as hell is a lot of typing. Our favourite comparable between sj. and the friendly neighbourhood bar doesn't actually hold water.

In a real life conversation, if Joe Bob says, "All fish are red" and Gord from Scarborough says, "Well, that's not true, all fish are blue, can you give me an example of red fish", the person is more or less obliged to back up their statement or say, "I have no idea. I just made that up".

Not so on a message board. You can flat out ignore the questioner and because you did NOT address him/her, continue to maintain that your original position was and continues to be correct--all evidence to the contrary.

And that's when the pissing matches usually start.

Like The Jones, this is my water cooler. And I understand the nature of different personas and different interests and different thresholds for humor. But as I've said several times here, you are as you post.

To simply say that anyone taking offense at something you've written is on them, is to deny your own culpability in the problem. Sorry, but some things are de facto offensive, or inflammatory or provocative or insulting or stupid. This is a site that attracts a lot of writers, obviously, and in the main the quality of thought and expression reflect that. But there are plenty of folks here who write as if they're shouting all the time. Dial it down a couple settings. Maybe you'll win some arguments. Or at least some allies.

The problem isn't exclusively in how posts are received or interpreted. The other end of the problem is a failure of basic self-expression.

So, what you're saying is most of the folks you work with are either older or younger than you? I'll buy that. ;D

I did not express myself very well.
    I'm in my late 30s.
About 60 percent of the newsroom is under 30. About 35 percent is over 48.
I am the only person in the newsroom, to my knowledge, who is in their 30s.
