WHY THE HELL HASN'T MIKE RICE BEEN FIRED YET?

Right. And if he sues the school, it's not to get his job back, it's to be paid for the duration of his contract.

Most schools, even in situations like this, do that anyway (or come to a settlement) so the matter goes away.

I'd be curious how many times, even when a coach is fired for cause, that they don't collect anything from the school. I'm guessing it doesn't happen often.

Yeah, professors are going to be very upset that the basketball coach got canned. Because they love sports and shit.

I gues the ones throwing erasers at their students' heads and calling them slurs are on notice.

  3. This is what I am saying ...
That's the ground on which he stands.

Here, college coaches at public universities are state employees, which entitles them to the grievance process.
I'd bet money Rice has the same latitude.

This is the only issue. He has no lawsuit, even in a Martian courtroom. Wrongful termination applies to things such as whistleblower retaliation and racial discrimination.

I haven't seen anything about whether he is going to collect on the rest of his contract, though. THAT is where there could possibly be a lawsuit.

  5. Then I'll bet money his firing turns into a "buyout."

Again, the school is going to be in trouble if they fired him for infraction for which has was already disciplined.
    Rice will be compensated.

And I won't be surprised if the AD loses his job for botching this thing.

I have no idea why you keep insisting on this. What "trouble"? Coaches get fired all the time. You don't have to show cause to be able to fire a college coach. The only "trouble" would be if the coach could prove you did it for discriminatory reasons.

You don't have to give a reason for firing a coach, let alone be held to the weird legal standard you are imagining.

Rutgers could have fired him because they wanted a fresh start.
Rutgers could have fired him because he didn't win enough.
Rutgers could have fired him because he didn't recruit well.
Rutgers could have fired him because of his record against a specific school that the AD considered a rival.
Or. ... Rutgers could have fired him because they had video of him being abusive toward players.

It really doesn't matter. They don't need to justify why they fired him.

His contract probably says that they do, for buyout purposes.

I remember this was talked about a little bit after Michigan didn't fire Rich Rodriguez right away after the excess practice violations occurred. The idea was that Michigan might wait until they went 7-5 that year, and then try to fire him "for cause" because of the violations, when really they were waiting to see how the program progressed ...

Didn't realize his dad is the Mike Rice who is part of one of the worst broadcasting crews in the NBA with the Blazers. He's the homer analyst, paired with the homer play-by-play guy.

Right, the only issue in play here is whether he is going to collect on the rest of his contract. I haven't seen anything about that yet.

If Rutgers wants to get out of paying him on the last 2 years of his contract, there will be a negotiation.

I'd be willing to bet there is language in the contract that would give them a pretty good escape clause based on what is on that video and whatever other bad behavior they have documented.

The only reason he might get a buyout is I am sure Rutgers would like to strike a balance between the money and making it go away as quickly as possible so they can move on.

With what had already happened with Rutgers and gays with the kid who killed himself, you'd think he would have known that he should have tread lightly when it comes to homophobic slurs.

I reference the whole discussion we had recently regarding the incredible salaries of CEOs, Board of Directors, etc. These people are paid massive amounts of money, yet time after time, they show that they don't have the common sense of even a college senior.

How in the FUCK can you watch that video, and not realize it is a fireable offense?

He may have certain due process rights as a state employee, but I don't think that there is a protection against what mght be considered to be double jeopardy. It might be a matter of how his contract is written -- he is not an "at-will" employee as someone suggested above. He is a contracted employee for a fix term and that document governs how he may be disciplined or terminated.
