Giving them the benefit of the doubt that this isn't a work, and then breaking it down Zapruder style, is it possible Rock was leaning in because he thought Smith was just going to say something to him?
I'm guessing Rock had the same thought any of us would have in that spot — WTF is this? — followed by "What the hell does he want?" So he leans in so Smith can whisper whatever in his ear without the mic picking it up. Then he sees the raised hand just in time to brace for it but not in time to block it.

Right after the slap, Rock does bow up for a split second. And in that same split second he probably processed a million bits of information — I just got hit by Will fuckin' Smith, in the middle of the Oscars; he's walking away and he's twice my size; maybe I crossed a line; be a professional; if I swing back my career is probably over; WTF just happened!?; etc. — and in that stunned moment the moment was over before he could really react the way most people might have.

Smith should've gotten Bart Scott to do it, he threatened a critical caller to his WFAN radio show that he would "slap the tase' right outcher mouf".

(And Scott was rewarded with a national gig on ESPN...)

Is anyone making the point that Jada should have been the one to do something about the joke? That she didn't need her man to defend her? That she has plenty of platforms on which to respond, or that she's more than physically capable of slapping someone if she were so inclined?

I'm not advocating for violence. But I am disgusted by the way society still thinks it's a man's duty to defend "his" woman, as if he owns her.

I remember watching that live; so much more powerful when y0u're approaching 60 rather than a teenager. And screw you Clint you haughty little entitled white fake tough guy. Damn I wish I remembered his retort, then I would have disliked him more all these years later.
