Wishing "good luck" to end an interview: polite or a little unethical? Awkward?

Irrelevant. In either case, I guess the concern would be somebody thinking you are taking a side either in the game to be played or an election. And in either case, it's just being polite.

Bob, when you say "Good luck" you're not saying you hope they win. You're saying you hope it goes smoothly, no one gets hurt, there isn't a bad call or something that taints the outcome, no idiot fans run out on the field or throw beer cans at the players, you have a safe trip there and back, etc.

Also, this thread reminds me of The Great Escape:

It's just being polite. If you do it to everyone you interview, it's balanced, right?

Now that I think about it, doesn't the ref say "Good luck" after the coin toss?

Only time it's a faux pas to use "Good Luck" is interviewing a deathrow inmate that is about to go to the chair/table.

Oh, for shit sake, it's nothing. It's just something you say. It's not a commitment. It's not a big deal.

What, are you all George Castle?

I'm OK with "good luck, Jim." Not OK with "good luck, coach."

Big pet peeve of mine is sportswriters calling coaches "coach" and not their names. They're not YOUR coach.

I would always say "good luck the rest of the way."

Do you call a doctor a doctor even if they are not your doctor?

I always said "coach" because I couldn't remember their first name.

My brother-in-law is a coach. I call him coach, but mostly because we have the same first name and it gets confusing at family gatherings.

"Thanks. Take care." was my thing. "Good luck" is just as harmless.
