The two lines in Ace's sig basically sum up the last couple pages of this thread for me.

Since this the issue you really want to debate, and since I haven't completely decided where I stand, explain to me why I should feel differently about Augusta than I do about girl scouts, AWSM and ladies-drink-free nights

I think we had this discussion in 1977. Done deal.

    You got me there.

If you are assigned to write about the girls scouts and want to go into the bathroom to interview them, you don't have my support.

I was being serious. I'm curious to hear a female perspective

Add the Masons to that list too.

Shorthand answer. Give a big-person response.

After reading all these comments, I hope the next time this happens -- and there will be a next time, with a unique set of circumstances that could make it seem isolated, too -- that the male reporter I'd standing next to at the time is someone like Ace.

Because when stuff like this happens there are reporters who stand around, and reporters who stand up and say it isn't right. And if you're sitting around trying to figure out how this or that is the exception rather than back up a fellow reporter then you know where you fall on that.

    From Tara's story:

"She apologized for the rule, saying it was not her policy, while insisting that the male security guard at the next doorway would bar me also. I stepped outside to see if I could do a different interview instead . . . "

    So . . .

Despite the fact that her first three days there were without incident . . .
And despite the fact that her trips there in previous years were without incident . . .

. . . she DOESN'T EVEN TRY to proceed on and see whether the "next" security guard would bar her? She just took the clueless guard's word for it and left it at that?

Trying to figure out how this is the exception? Uh-uh. I think we've stated pretty clearly, from word go, that this is the exception.

And if you put your head down and barrel into this fight even when you think this is not a classic women's-rights issue, that it's just a clueless, lone security guard, you might be an example of liberal guilt.

There, Ace. I used it in a sentence.

"Proceed on"? By doing what? Knocking the guard down? Tasing her?
