I think it involves Adage #1:

Anyone who claims something was done accidentally/by mistake is lying and should be punished as much as possible.

Corollary 1a: It should be a public punishment, with a demand for an apology, just to make sure this never happens again.

If you get blindingly mad every time your daughter has a run-in with incompetence, it's going to be a long unhappy life.

It's possible this whole situation might never have happened if the Augusta media staff knew what it was doing. When everyone in the world realized that McIlroy wasn't even going to finish in the top 10, a simple announcement over the PA system in the media center would have been beneficial: "We're not going to bring Rory McIlroy into the interview room, but we will get quotes transcribed and distributed." They went to the trouble to get quotes from players that weren't factors at all — who in the hell cared what Charley Hoffman had to say? — but they ignored the player who led or shared the lead for three days?

I would, too, just in a for-the-record, due-diligence way, but I think this is unlikely to yield much useful info. What's she going to say? It might be worthwhile to ask the officials for copies of any instructional material they provided the guards, or to locate a few other guards and ask them what they were told to do.

I just find it completely ridiculous that anyone would believe the guard was told this was the policy. Exactly how do you think this topic would come up during their orientation? "Oh and by the way, if any women, especially if any of those goddamn Yankees, want to get into the locker room, this year we are telling them NO WAY! We have decided to revert to the 1940s. Be firm. No women in the locker room. We repeat: No women in the locker room!" Come on. Be serious.

If this event is the key to that happening, then we're in great shape.

Learning to deal with and overcome incompetence and ignorance is also a worthwhile life tool. Because you're sure as hell never going to eliminate it. Helps you become resourceful and patient and appreciate that staging events such as the Masters and Super Bowl is a ridiculously complex undertaking and that if only a couple of fans or media members were inconvenienced during one of these things, maybe that's not so tragic.

And I hope you do, so there is at least one good father left in the world. Most of the rest of us tried, MisterCreosote. I swear we did.

EDIT: What a cruel thing to say. I hope nobody ever says that to you.

You have no idea what kind of parents any of the other of us are. None. You don't know if we provide tough love, or if we are too easy on our children, or if we have made mistakes, or if we have done everything right.

    You know NONE of that.

So, all I can gather by what you put out there is you were trying to think of the one thing that would hurt people the most. Well, pretty good choice.

Actually, I hope you DO have daughters. I hope they give you all the joy in the world. And I hope you remember next time that we're anonymous voices to you on a message board. You don't know us.

Really, I think several here could benefit themselves and the thread by pulling back on their stingers, just a tad. There are threads well suited for condescending prick-ery, but this isn't one of them.

My gosh, how nice it must be to have all the answers.

Try this analogy: a wind storm blows down a tree next door to your house. The tree falls and crushes half your house.

A lumber company is going around the neighborhood chopping down trees and not giving much thought to how they are doing it. One of them is cut incorrectly and falls, crushing half your house.

It's not right to say one is "no big deal" and the other a "disaster." From your standpoint, the damage is the same. The point is: What do you do about it? In one case there is clearly blame and liability. The other is more or less a shrug-your-shoulders act of God.

Just because some people here believe the isolated act of one ignorant guard is just one of those things, basically an unavoidable act of God, doesn't mean we feel any less bad that Tara Sullivan had a tree fall on her house.

BB, that's a good analogy, but so many assumptions are being made on behalf of the security guard.

According to Tara's article, the guard's attitude seemed to be one of, "I agree the rule stinks." Well who put the idea into her head? I cotton to Poz's take. To me, that column had a tone that really matched the severity of the incident. Is it the end of the freakin' world? No, but it stinks. It stinks worse than Fuzzy Zoeller's breath after several scotch and cokes.

That analogy only works if your neighbor - the Augusta National Golf Club - has a half-century history of sawing every tree along the property line halfway through.
