Aside from that column likely being completely fabricated, it's a piece of crap, who cares? column.

If I were the editor -- and if the column were legit -- I would have told Woody no more Super Bowl trips unless he could write without pulling some crap out of his ass

The problem is, columnists who are at the level that Woody Paige is, and there's probably less than 10 of them left still at newspapers, usually have more clout than the SE, the ME, the Exec. Editor...

If he did this at the Washington Post or NY Times, they would can his ass, but it's the papers in places like Denver and Detroit that really feel the need to have the signature columnist and they can essentially do whatever they want.

    It's a terrible system.

You're right, Mizzou. I was envisioning a perfect system.

But in a perfect system, Woody Paige would be an angry, middle-aged agate clerk at the Denver Post.

Sounds like the start of a good movie.

The Post was rid of Paige a few years ago and it begged him to come back.

I don't buy Woody's lame excuse, either. I haven't been writing columns near as long as Woody, and even I know how to write to my usual space.

    He should be gone. Period.

    The Dickey/Deliverance stuff is deadly.

So....what is it that makes these guys do this?

    Arrogance?

    Sense of entitlement?

    Stupidity?

Or some combination of all three?

Not to mention that with the Deliverance, it's not like you're trifling with something that sold
142 copies that no one's familiar with.

    This ain't over.

Seems to me Paige had a pre-conceived notion of what he was going to find when he went up to "Deliverance" country — toothless rednecks who didn't know (or care) about the Super Bowl. Then he got up there and discovered they actually had not only dentistry and electricity, but ESPN.

So he bent the "facts" to fit his story.

I've lived in the Deep South, including several rural areas, for about 80 percent of my life, and the only people I've ever heard use the word "iffen" were in bad TV movies.

Granting that he made the trip . . .

    disappointing output.
