This one just came up in a meeting: monies!

I ABSO-FUCKING-LUTELY HATE this term. Hate! It's money, singular and plural, not monies. The next person who says it in my presence is going to be punched.

Totally agree. That drives me nuts, too.

I haven't read this whole thread, so maybe she's already made an appearance, but methinks this will inspire 21 to post about a word she really hates ...

    I'll second "yummy" and "efforting."

And and, "back, back, back,'' as intoned by Chris Berman. Want to throw a brick through the TV every time.

Same with the "say hello to my little friend schtick" to whichever ESPN idiot uses it.

    "RBIs"

Stupid fucking AP. It's not "run batted ins," it's "runs batted in"

As someone used as their example, and I now have taken as mine:

POWs = Prisoners of War, not Prisoner of Wars.

If a set of letters is a standalone abbreviation, then more than one of those items is a pluralized version.

    POW is POWs
    RBI is RBIs

I thought it was Mike Greenberg who chronically overused that, though I could be wrong.

    --------------

Nearly got kicked out of a family reunion for jumping on someone's use of "ironic," but that's already been discussed. A few of my most shudder-worthy:

    'Shups
    Go score a touchdown
One more time (because it never means just one more time)
I don't want to ruin our special friendship.

So when I go to Chicago in two weeks I shouldn't say "Chicago, Ill-i-NOISE"

    ;D

Those who use "medal" and podium" as verbs.
