Worst Movie Sequel Ever

Never been a huge fan of scary movies in general -- unless it involves Roman Catholics and the devil -- but I can't remember many slasher sequels that approaches the original, most less a 6th installment.

 

I sometimes wonder about what type of careers people would have had if they didn't die young. I could see Belushi as Tony Soprano, Elvis Presley hosting a variety show on CBS, James Dean having Robert Redford's career.

 

River Phoenix was a better actor than his brother.

 

I always thought Christian Slater owed his career to Phoenix's premature demise. See also Emma Stone and Lindsey Lohan.

 

All of the Bad News Bears spinoffs were shit.

 

As was the remake.

 

Those guys weren't built for the long haul, anymore than Jim Morrison was. Some people can't pivot to adulthood. Then again, there's the example of Robert Downey Jr. He had to be at the top of a lot of people's dead pools in the 1990s.

 

The problem with most sequels is that they think either the plotting or the cast were what made the original film work. You'll see scenes that mimick scenes from the first, or similar characters. The hard part is when an underdog "triumphs" in some way in the first film. It's hard to reestablish the characters as underdogs again. Hoosiers II? Dodgeball II?

 

Rocky II worked. But mainly bc -- spoiler alert -- he lost in the first one.

 

Hey- I have a soft spot for Bad News Bears: Breaking Training.
It's less a film than a snapshot of American life in the late 1970s.
Endless hijinks, toilet humor, second-rate jokes and a heartwarming mission objective.
The tricked-out van that cuts across the Southwestern landscape is the ultimate phallic representation of male conquest.
And everyone from Rudy Stein to Carmen Ronzonni is rocking cowboy boots.

Like I say to the kids: You had to be there.

 

Was Halloween III a bad movie? Yes. Did it have a great cover poster? Yes. Was it a great premise/concept? Yes, but execution was way off

 

I wonder about how John Lennon would have aged, less artistically than personally. I remember having a conversation in which my brother was calling Lennon a hypocrite for one of his liberal economic rants. What would he have been like during the Reagan years? How would he have handled his wealth as he got older? Would the abuse allegations catch up to him?
