    Seaver and the Mets.

Jeff George and the Falcons. He was essentially told to fuck off and go home, like Keyshawn with the Bucs.

Clemens left Boston to sign with the Blue Jays as a free agent. Then the Jays traded him to the Yankees two years later for David Wells and two others.

Steinbrenner finally shit on Yogi Berra enough to drive him away for good.

Duquette wasn't wrong. Clemens had a 3.77 ERA and a 1.29 WHIP from 1993-96, down from 2.80 & 1.10 from '84-92. He turned 34 late in the '96 season and was perpetually fat and whining. Nobody could have envisioned a full return to form at the prices Clemens was demanding. A less assholish person might have understood the situation and met the Red Sox halfway, but that's never been Clemens' style. So he turned into the Incredible Hulk w/the best drugs money could buy and everyone had a good laugh at Duquette b/c he was sort of dweeby and awkward.

After one year, Duquette also brought in Pedro Martinez, a more than acceptable replacement. But those were the super bitter years of the fucking Curse of the Bambino, where a reset was considered a betrayal by both media and fanbase. I should point out that Duquette made plenty of errors in this period, too, but he was always in there pitching, unlike the current GM.

Yogi was such good people, even Steinbrenner felt compelled to apologize.

Duquette's fascination with drafting local players early was infuriating. His pre-Moneyball strategy of finding obscure players was cute. Taking flyers on washed up pitchers, not so much.

I remember that coming to a head when George and head coach June Jones had a very visible sideline argument in front of ESPN camera on a Sunday night game. Shown here with narration from Dan Patrick.
