Would calling Obama illiterate have been better?

    Montezuma --

I honestly haven't, but that could be because I don't much follow the NBA.

I remember repeated references to Oakley's toughness, but I don't remember "gritty". Doesn't mean it wasn't said.

I also remember a SC anchor who used to riff on this by always using "grittyguttyscottyskiles" when referring to Skiles.

The point being ... and this really should resolve it all ... is that not everyone uses these "code" words in a malicious way, and because they're not totally rejected by society yet, there's no reason for the rest of us to be held language hostages.

Did Biden use the word in a negative way? Absolutely.

But people have also used the phrase red-headed stepchild (of which I am one) and you don't see me trying to have that phrase taken off the books.

Hey, some of us have heard, "Two-inch little Irish curse" a few more times than we would like.

Again, I state that as writers, it is our responsiblity to know when our words can be taken for more than face value, and tread carefully.

Just as it is the responsibility of the reader to not read TOO much into it.

Actually, that's the whole point of this thread. Problem is, words no longer mean what they mean.

Just as the liberalati that hijacked the language. It wasn't conservatives who consider taxes "contributions."

If I say something that means what it always meant and some group of professional victims puts a new meaning on it, that's their problem, not mine. As JD rightly says, then we should completely eliminate the word articulate from the language. It's never used for whites and apparently can't be used for African-Americans (about 99.999% nowadays who have never, ever been anywhere near Africa, BTW).

Please. I suggest you Google "Pawlenty & Health Impact Fee."

This is not a conservative or liberal issue.

    It was me.

I snuck out for a nip of grandpa's cough medicine and a bit of fresh air.

(And anyone who knew that I meant a drink and a smoke, step right up and claim your prize.)

And now we have to open up the re-education camp for Tony.

And do you know what a "liberalati" is?

Tony...we've managed to keep this thread pretty clean so far without unnecessary names, etc. And I actually agree with a lot of your opinion on this.

So can you please just drop that liberalati crap? Please. It adds nothing but vitriol to the debate.

This can only end with us once again opening up the debate about the correct plural of clitoris.

Which is, again, for the record, clitorides. I don't care what you dunderheads on here voted for. Find one some time, and then you can name the thing.
