    Perhaps the guy meant he was willing to buy the space as an ad.

    No. I covered preps in one of the most politically corrupt places in the United States, where politicians and cops were bought and sold (and convicted) regularly, but the people who called demanding sports stories all felt a sense of entitlement and never offered a bribe, they would just call all the time and become pests.

    At another place, though, someone called saying he had information on a local scandal and wanted money to talk. When I said no, he said our competition would pay. I said that I doubted it, but go ahead and try your luck.
