I just figured that he was getting badly made cigars. A well made cigar stays lit.

Some here have wondered why Thompson did not right more about the team and it's lack of success. Maybe we got the answer indirectly in that Jordan is not putting enough of his focus into actually making them successful. He seems to have put a lot of his friends in charge and maybe they are not best possible braintrust.

Interpreted the cigar as being an example of how Michael Jordan can no longer control his universe. He is clinging to the need to show others up, but he can't do it anymore. He is now mortal.

I was thinking the Thompson was implying that the only thing that Jordan will ever have in common with Red Auerbach as an owner is the cigar.

WTF? Some of you guys have a vivid imagination or too much time on your hands. Do you smoke a cigar? Here's a hint, THEY DON'T STAY LIT.
Enough with the metaphors already. It was a good story but all of this off the wall shit is just that, off the wall.

I do smoke cigars and well made one's stay lit. Cigar purists will tell you that constant relighting of a cigar will ruin the flavor.

I smoke cigars too Boom. Also smoke cigarettes. The point I was making was that people are reading far too much into this story.

Drip, I can't believe your friends Mehmet Oz and Atul Gawande approve of you smoking so much.

That's what makes it a great story. Clearly it's engaged people to want to discuss it.

Boom no argument about it being a great story. I just think some along here are reading too much into it. But that's my opinion.

We have learned that when it comes to wine and cigars Jordan is a rookie. Merlot is a beginners wine and he smokes poorly constructed cigars that
    have to constantly be relit.
