    Agreed Sully is the clubhouse leader.

    I don't think assassins/criminals/mistresses should count.

    Ken Jennings wasn't an overnight sensation, but he was close.

    I'd suggest Fan Man - but I don't know his name.
    Fawn Hall back in the day, came out of nowhere.

    I don't think any athlete counts. At least college and pro competitors have honed skills and earned some degree of notoriety before one historic performance.
    Sully is a great call.
    I'm sticking with Zapruder for a high ranking.
    Bartman is excellent pick.

    I guess some people are ruling out athletes, but I seem to remember seeing Mark Fidrych beating the Yankees on national TV one night in 1976, and immediately after that was hottest personality in the country.

    I’d think Edmund Hillary must be right up there. He didn’t just become celebrated but was the most famous man in the world after summiting Everest.
