I prefer the Times special sections, but if you're looking for great journalism let's not get sucked up in marketsize...
At the Super Bowl, saw reporters walking around picking up those seat cushions. I mean, leaving with 6-8 of them, lugging them back to the media bus. Not that those are going on ebay or anything. Not that the same reporters won't leave a decent tip when they're traveling on the company dime...
The Seattle Times has a good stable of writers, has a ton of space in the section and spends money. Granted, Blethen is a nut and that paper is only bleeding money and using that space because it needs to show a loss. Or that's the prevailing skinny anyway. The PI easily has the best columnist...
