More layoffs at Las Vegas Sun

Hearing that Las Vegas Sun columnist Ron Kantowski and UNLV basketball writer Rob Miech were let go today. Kantowski was with the Sun for decades, including a few years as SE, and was a great and creative voice in Vegas' sports world. Miech, a former SportsLine college hoops writer, did a great...

    How soon to upgrade?

Thanks for the thoughtful reply, EStreet. My biggest worry is the paper's structure. I'd just feel better at a shop that's throwing 2 million papers a week than at a shop that's throwing 20,000 a week.

    How soon to upgrade?

I moved to a new west coast city area about four months ago, taking a job at a tiny suburban paper because I needed a job up here and they were the only ones who had an opening. Don't want to give too many details about where I'm at, other than it's a good newspaper town and a very nice place to...

Joe Hawk on 9/11: "I did not shed a tear. Not one."

Free OJ - Did you cry? When you saw those images on your television, those scenes that looked too unreal to be believed, did you weep? I think few of us did. I think that moment was too overwhelming to draw tears. It was surreal and painful and life-altering all in one punch. It was too much...

All I'm saying is, the reputation may be well-deserved.

I've worked with a few UNLV journalism grads. And they're all really, really, really bad. Put it in really tiny print on your resume. On the back. On the one hand, it's a decent sized paper in a quickly growing region. On the other hand, you're replacing a longtime reporter (and a damn good...

    Advance

I'm curious if anyone here works for / has worked for Advance, particularly at its smaller papers. I'd like to know your impressions of the company, how much corporate gets involved at the local level, whether you saw people get the chance to move up in the company, etc.

    St. Paul backup Twins/GA

Again... when someone whose resume is limited to "Internship" is getting a pro gig, that is the next best thing to handing it out at the airport.

    St. Paul backup Twins/GA

Since when do internships equate to strong credentials? They might equate to cheap and capable labor, but "strong credentials"!?!?

    Student paper stealing quotes

The answer would seemingly be yes, but MLB.com kind of blurred the line on this. Still, I tend to think that lifting stuff from MLB.com, for example, presents a more authoritative way of stating something that you otherwise couldn't report. For example, in my past life as a minor league...

    Greenspun Media in LV

It'd be surprising if the Sun had an opening in sports right now. They've got eight community weeklies with about 30k throws each, and sports folks at those papers seem to do about 8-10 stories a week (prep stuff, community sports, etc). Don't know of any other sports positions in the company.
