My understanding is that the job came down to kelsie and one other male, who was at least as qualified if not more so, and that gender probably tipped the scales in her favor.

I wonder if her being the fiance of Chris Snow (if that is the case) helped to tip those scales as well. Not saying she's not qualified for the job, because her credentials look strong, but I'm sure it wasn't lost on the SE that one of his reporters will have the ear of someone inside the local NHL franchise.

Since when do internships equate to strong credentials? They might equate to cheap and capable labor, but "strong credentials"!?!?

The point being that I was not attacking her credibility, only bringing up the topic of her connection.

I thought you were sadly misinformed earlier about Bass' situation. But your assertion that Kelsie somehow got the nod for this job because her fiance works in the Wild front office is laughable. Exactly how does that give her an advantage? She might get Marian Gaborik's secret groin remedy over pillow talk? She was hired to cover the Twins, and I doubt she'll be allowed to go near the Wild because of said relationship.

As for all the retread dirt about Bass, I'll say it again. He's a very bad manager. And the reporters who were demoted were bad at their jobs. Check the competitive record.

My whole point way back was in saying you can do good work at that paper in spite of it all. If you'd rather toss grenades from a misinformed bunker, feel free. But the revolving door at the Pi Press means there are opportunities for others to go there, kick ass and move on. And last time I checked, they weren't handing out pro beats at the airport.

Maybe I'm naive, but what is a consumer report/investigative consumer report?
I've heard of background checks, which are reasonable.
But what is this? Looking to see what you buy with your credit card?

But of course, that's perfectly fine, when a female gets a job over a guy simply because she's a female. Please. That is the only reason she got this job.

I am not claiming to have inside knowledge of any kind. Just bringing up thoughts for discussion, which is what we do around here.

1. If the reporters involved in the lawsuit were so bad, why did they each get picked up by better papers for bigger/better jobs upon leaving the Pioneer Press?

2. That Mike Bass is the subject of a sexual discrimination lawsuit is a fact. It is not "misinformed" opinion. There are a lot of other rumors and opinions that swirl about this guy, but that point cannot be disputed.

3. As I have said, I'm not attacking Smith personally or as a hire. I have no doubt that people in "connected" situations like that can be professional. But it is a connection worth discussing, especially given how much Snow is discussed around here.

Again... when someone whose resume is limited to "Internship" is getting a pro gig, that is the next best thing to handing it out at the airport.

Some fraud charges, etc., do not show up in a standard back-ground check. Basically just another way to vet an employee.

I wondered the same thing. I love the PP, but they both made upgrades.

Kelsie is a great hire. She's a talented writer who has more big-time experience than most non-interns. She's written Red Sox for the Globe, covered a big-time Big XII program in college, and did a lot of Twins stuff for the Press last year. They already know here at the Press, so why not hire her? She's done a good job there, there's no questionmark about her dedication, they've seen her raw copy and know the clips aren't doctored.

Then there's also the fact that she now has her roots in Minnesota because of Snow. No risk in her leaving soon.

Whenever a young, talented writer gets a high-profile job, people here make excuses as to why they didn't get hired.

Snow got the Wild job out of college and killed it. Then was the Sox beat reporter a year later, and killed that. His dad might have helped him land the Wild job, but he sure as heck didn't do the job for him. Snow deserves everything he's gotten.

Everybody in this business uses connections. That's the nature of this biz.
