    Jim Wyatt leaving Tennessean

I believe most teams are out of the NFL pension plan and using a 401(k).

Struggling with job search and next steps

The complete picture is summed up here. You are either too young or too old, have too much experience or too little, while companies desire expertise at no price at all. You will be driven mad by this conundrum as you go on interviews at your expense to talk to people who want to incur no...

Chicago Tribune hits sports web/desk staff hard

The four scariest words I ever hear from college kids are: "I'm majoring in journalism."

Gary Mihoces retires from USA Today

Outstanding individual. Loved working with him. He did everything from the NFL to horse racing to bull riding and poker tournaments. Incredibly versatile, hard-working guy. I wish him well in retirement.

The Washington Times partners with The Redskins

Jack Kent Cooke also liked the Times and hated the Post. At one time, the GM (I think it was Charley Casserly) was under orders not to talk to the Post. And I seem to remember Norv Turner getting pimped out as a 'columnist' for a Times section. The Redskins used to have a deal with the Examiner...

    RIP deck Heller

deck was one of the all-time greats, whether breaking news or writing a lede that elicited a grin. He was a kind and considerate man who always had words of encouragement for aspiring (and sometimes perspiring) young journalists.

Why did Gannett Move Out to McLean?

The honchos wanted the softball field, a heli-pad, and easy access to Dulles Toll Road so they could get to the corporate jets. They sold the land used for the softball field, no one can remember seeing a helicopter (not one belonging to Mother G, anyways), and they soon ditched not only the...

Beusse out at USA Today Sports

I think the website (sports anyway) is a hideous mashup of trite gossip and nonsense. Can't find stories of substance displayed. And the print product's Monday NFL coverage is clearly not an improvement over the past. There's even less space for too many roundups.

    Darin Gantt leaving NFL beat?

Darin has always been a good guy and a solid reporter on the Panthers' beat. I will miss his work. This is another example of how newspapers kill themselves. They take a shovel, beat themselves over the head with it until they are senseless, and then bury the people who excel at their craft.

Donald Trump: Should We Take Him Seriously? (Now leads 2012 GOP Field by 9%)

Re: Donald Trump: Should We Take Him Seriously? I would say he is the "hair apparent" to Barack Obama.

    Florio Lectures Rodgers

Can't remember who it was that told me this story but it was an NFL player who always signed for fans after training camp practices. He said there was "a rule of 100." You sign for 100 people and head for the locker room and the 101st tells everyone what a jerk you are for not signing. Thought...

    Best newspaper sports website

While you're researching, trying "poring over various sights" and not pouring. Poring, as in "to read or study with steady attention or application: a scholar poring over a rare old manuscript."

    RIP, Mike Celizic

This was a good man and a terrific writer. Mike made his battle with cancer public, wrote and spoke eloquently about it, as he always did about sports and anything else he set his mind to. I first got to know him when he worked at The Record in New Jersey. Very sad day...

    RIP Leah Siegel

Knew Leah and her dad. Mo Siegel was a Washington institution as a newspaperman. Leah leaves a legacy as a human being larger than almost any I can think of right now. Pick any superlative you like for her -- smart, talented, courageous. Just a wonderful person. I extend my sympathies to her...

    Arenas/Stadiums/Venues of Your Past

Loved those pictures of the Polo Grounds. Saw the Mets play there a couple of times. Shea Stadium as well. Had season tickets in the upper deck for the Jets.
