    Media guides/ebay

First, I think current reporters selling media guides on ebay is wrong. Does that change for one of the newspapers closed in the past year? I know one recently closed newspaper (some of you might be able to figure out which one I'm talking about) that has decades of media guides that are about...

    Tucson Citizen closing up shop

This injunction boils down to the allegation Gannett (owner of the Citizen) conspired with Lee (owner of the larger daily in Tucson, the Arizona Daily Star) to make sure there wasn't a viable competitor to the Star in Tucson as Gannett now shares 50 percent of the Star's profits. The Newspaper...

    More furloughs from Gannett

Obviously my post was sarcastic. There was no reason to stoop so low as to call someone "Mr. Dubow." That's just low. In all honesty, I think the furlough situation is awful and just because there are those of us worse off (i.e. me and my Tucson Citizen colleagues) doesn't mean a furlough...

    More furloughs from Gannett

There is some good news. We've had the good fortune of finding out our Gannett-owned newspaper is not being required to take those shirtty furloughs! Whew! Guess we avoided getting screwed over by the man on this one. Sincerely, Tucson Citizen (1870 - March 21, 2009 . . . TBD)

    APSE results

The Citizen has been a Top 10 daily something like seven of the last eight or eight of the last nine years. Had a nice little streak end last year. The paper has some special section awards from the past and several writing awards through the year's, too. Even though the paper doesn't shut...

    APSE judging

When I judged a couple years back my my paper didn't win, I didn't get a bj, a reach around, or any other sexual favor... come to think of it, I don't even remember getting doughnuts. Was it what I was wearing?

Tucson Citizen finds no buyer, close to closing

The Citizen hasn't made Gannett money in years, but its stake in the Joint Operating Agreement with Lee's Arizona Daily Star (the 6-times larger circ., morning daily in Tucson), has made it millions so when Gannett found a way to continue being a part of a JOA without actually having to put out...

    APSE judging question

I guess I shouldn't have brought this up because I'm not saying anything about some conspiracy, but came across that way. Again, I have judged and it was a heck of a lot of work and every bit worth it. I DON'T THINK ITS A CONSPIRACY. I do think telling people ahead of time who is judging a...

    APSE judging question

I've judged, too. I was never approached by a specific entrant, but was asked by people from a paper if I had got to to a particular article yet in a large-circulation category. It was nothing more than that, and on site I don't think there are any issues I would say suggest conspiracy. And if...

    APSE judging question

I judged once in the past five years and every group had three categories to judge. Our group judged two categories and broke them down into 20 finalists, of which another group picked the 10 winners out of those finalists. Our third category was judging a final stack of 20 some other group...

    APSE judging question

Sorry if this topic has already been brought up, but is there any benefit to APSE posting in advance a list of contest judges and the categories they will be judging? http://apse.dallasnews.com/contest/2008/2009judgingroster.html I've judged in the past and found out what we were judging only...

Tucson cable system shows porn during Super Bowl

Killeen Sports Editor - Let me hear it!

What about someone who has been an SE in the past and is at an afternoon paper shutting down in two months who desperately wants to stay in journalism (for some reason he doesn't fully understand sometimes)?

Another one bites the dust: Tucson Citizen on the chopping block

Not likely. I can't see Lee adding any staff in its current situation. I left a sports editor job in another state just under two years ago to join the Citizen sports staff (knowing there was a very real possibility of this happening) because its sports department truly is a good one - one I...

Another one bites the dust: Tucson Citizen on the chopping block

That would be March 21, not 31. ... maybe it was all those factual errors that did us in.

    Posting links

I agree. I can't figure out a real good argument against it other than it just don't feel right. If that is all I can tell our group, thouh, I suppose our paper will likely start urging (it won't ever become a requirement) bloggers and beat writers to start linking stories to relevant sites.

    Posting links

I'm part of a Web redesign team at my paper that includes much more than just design. A question was posed in a blogging discussion today that I wanted to post here and get some thoughts. The hits on a sports blog we have shot through the roof (relative to that blog's normal traffic) one day...

    Gary Parrish feature

This doesn't diminish from Gary's article, but as a follow up... The coach has recently been fired and accused of having sex with a minor. Thought it was worth an update, so here's the link from a paper in that neck of the woods: <a...
