Another one bites the dust: Tucson Citizen on the chopping block

Do employees still have to take the furlough?
Seriously, best of luck to everyone there.

I'm surprised instead of closing a paper Gannett doesn't try the citizen journalist thing out in Tucson. Interesting that they'll let a paper fold. Don't know what to make of this one.

There are some damn good writers at the Citizen, especially in sports. (Rivera, Moredich, Gimino.) Hope they get other opportunities, and quickly.

Where will the Arizona Republic take its UA coverage from?

Any hope the Daily Star will absorb some of the staff?

Not likely. I can't see Lee adding any staff in its current situation.

I left a sports editor job in another state just under two years ago to join the Citizen sports staff (knowing there was a very real possibility of this happening) because its sports department truly is a good one - one I wanted to be a part of.

It had a run of eight-straight APSE Top 10 Daily Section awards (I suppose whether that is a good thing is up for debate). Considering its circulation size (down to under 20,000 now), it absolutely had a group of writers that could hold its own with just about any of the big papers in the West.

It was worth leaving the old gig to be a part of this one, even if its come to an end so soon. I learned a lot from these guys.
