When job posts say "No phone calls, please," does no really mean no?

They wouldn't put no calls if they didn't mean it.

Bristol editor gives one-fingered salute to Washington Post

Also I bet that working for People magazine you gather a lot more interesting anecdotes than working a regular beat.

    Changes/Corrections in Online Journalism

I've had to yank quotes out of stories. Those are the biggest changes I've made. If a reader emailed and asked why something changed or went away, I'd tell them why for sure. But I haven't gotten such an email yet.

Bristol editor gives one-fingered salute to Washington Post

I liked it too. I hate the big smug guys and love it when their lazy work is exposed. Congrats Bristol.

AJC circ drops 24.7 percent MORE, quality of sports section drops 2,470 percent

Everything you said goes for just about every major metro area though. City population tiny, existence of suburban papers. I thought we all assumed this info when we still said OMG to this decline.

AJC circ drops 24.7 percent MORE, quality of sports section drops 2,470 percent

About 5.5 million. It's no coincidence that Atlanta is one of the most wired cities in the US and its major metro paper is basically dead. There's a lot of options on where to get news, and they aren't picking the AJC. Sure, the paper's online numbers are probably higher than some other...

Roethlisberger: "He was raised with old-fashioned, middle-America values."

The midwest ends where the flatness stops and the hills of the Appalachians begin, imo.

Hearst papers to use Bleacher Report stories

When I get plagiarized, which happens (sadly) about four or five times a year, my significant other says to me, "at least you wrote something good enough that people want to steal." This makes me more angry. I want to stop writing altogether because there is no value placed on it anymore...

Hearst papers to use Bleacher Report stories

Actually, I was bothered more by the supposition of what was in the mind of someone. That's not something you guess at. You either ask them or you are silent on the subject.

Hearst papers to use Bleacher Report stories

All I know is that a month or so ago I wrote something original and the major point of it was rewritten into a Bleacher Report article, with no attribution. It was just a hair short of stealing, so I won't pursue it. But it doesn't mean it wasn't a deck move.

    Why are unpaid internships legal?

My understanding of the law on unpaid interns is that they cannot be doing work that is the core of the money-making process. They can only do work that is in addition to what the normal workers do, it can't replicate it. This is why a lot of interns work for the charity arms of businesses. And...

Editing quotes to reflect proper speech

Q&A's need the most editing usually, since you can't paraphrase. As you say, it's a readability issue. I make it into full sentences except when they seem to jump out of a sentence because they almost said something they shouldn't have. That I leave in because it's sometimes the most...

Editing quotes to reflect proper speech

I've got someone who adds a bunch of explanation too. Highly annoying. As if they are the only one who can interpret the quote. We all understand who the pronouns refer to, idiot.

New Sports writer would like advice

Because we all have so much extra time that we can come on here and ask fake questions? No, I think almost all of it is genuine. There are still aspects that I haven't done yet and I have no qualms about asking for advice when that's the case.

    Journalists in Haiti

Agree. The only other denomination that has archbishops are Anglican/Episcopalian, which is an offshoot of Catholicism. Just like if you said he was a Rabbi, I would assume he was Jewish. There's no need to say he's Jewish.

    Sources say once again

Right, if it's something directly observable, like someone's presence, you don't need a source to tell you that. You observe it, and you write it.

"AP, we don't need you either." --Sincerely, Google

I'm glad people are finally standing up to Google. I had to work with them in another capacity a few years ago, and they wanted special treatment on just about everything. Like the rules don't apply to them. It's ridiculous.
