Alden and the Union-Tribune

Didn't get a chance to read the whole story, but I feel like I've read it before about different cities. That and I couldn't recall if we had a separate thread for this.

This Is the Beginning of the End for the Union-Tribune | Voice of San Diego
That's a well written and researched story … which of course makes it fairly depressing.

Sounds like the previous regime in San Diego was trying to find a way forward for the U-T as some sort of print/digital hybrid. All Alden cares about is putting out a bare-bones print edition while bleeding it of whatever money remains.

State attorneys general should probably look into newspapers and their auto-pay, and price increases. My folks pay well above the cover price for a home delivered paper (and I'm fine with a reasonable delivery fee), but I do think they are preying on older folks who don't notice the price increases. You see the same thing from predatory magazine subscription sellers, selling magazine order slips designed to look like bills with rates well above the cover prices of the magazine they are offering.

As someone who's handled my mom's finances for a while, I feel what Dan says. She still wants the paper every day, though, even though the press run is earlier and earlier and she doesn't get her cherished lottery numbers in it. I think she's paying $140/month total for both Boston papers.

Newspapers and AOL are in the same boat now, preying on the olds who have always used it and are resistant to change.
