Another "Get Out" Thread . . .

I just decided, right here, right now, in the middle of typing a story: I'm going to be a teacher. An English teacher. A high school English teacher.

It was an English teacher who got me into journalism, which was fine when the industry wasn't what it is today. It was a teacher who coached me in basketball all through high school, and if it wasn't for hoops, I may not have gone to college in the first place.

It pays about the same. But I get the summers off. I work 9-5. It's sort of what I do now - reading, editing, story telling, etc.

Now. I have to contact the university.

Good for you.

Other thoughts:
Environmental engineering. There'll be a lot of jobs for the next 50 years trying to find ways to make things more energy efficient.
Or, like Petty said, the Navy. Easily the most preferable branch of the service. Except perhaps for the Coast Guard.

Nice choice, Pete. But I wouldn't go looking for a job in Dallas.

Anyway, as far as alternative careers, I'd pick nursing or anything in healthcare.

If you are into computers at all, seems like there are tons of IT jobs out there.

Is it me, or does it seem like there's been a few IT layoffs recently?

i would have joined rotc like i wanted to do in the first place, but decided against because I thought I was too good for the military.

Now, here I am, putting together an application for the Air Force's officer selection board. Better hours, better pay, and much more rewarding than getting the name of every jv kid in a cross country story.

Edit: Better hours, you know, if you're not fighting a war or anything.

A communication degree is a waste of time... A journalism degree might actually carry more wight. There's a reason all of those athletes are communication and sociology majors.

If you're good with computers, that's the way to go. A close second would be doing anything in health care.

They can always hire some schlub in India to do any computer job you can imagine. Much harder to outsource the night shift at County General.

That schlub in India isn't on-site and unless your idea of tech support is asking "Did you reboot the computer first?" then on-site is a necessity for hardware issues, some software issues and many networking issues.
