Chicago media and WNBA

I forgot reporters were supposed to be advocates of the teams they cover.

I've noticed an interesting and understandable advocacy of women's sports by the media covering them the last few years. I get it--to get the increased coverage you desire for the sports, you need to advocate why--but it does stray a bit into an ethical gray area. But in terms of ethical gray areas strayed into over the last however many years, it registers very low on my list of concerns. And there have been some pretty good exposes written about the NWHL and NWSL by these advocates.

It makes no sense. If there's this huge audience for the content, wouldn't you be thrilled to have it all to yourself?

Why do you need the presence of other media outlets to legitimize your coverage if the audience is there? These people have the chicken and egg backwards; they're arguing if legacy media covered this niche stuff then the legacy audience would transfer over to their niche coverage. Its bollocks

It'd be one thing to say, "They didn't cover the playoff game."

But: "They didn't cover a conference call."

It's honestly not even one thing to say they didn't cover a playoff game.

news outlets should generally cover what they think should be covered (to make money or to send a positive message about who they are as a corporation) and what they can cover. Some print operations have shirt for space in their paper and they damn well know, to the click, what people read online.

The WNBA is very well covered, all things considered, thanks to ESPN.

It's horrible being on a beat that relatively few people care about.

You can make those stories about the water board sing but ultimately it's soul-killing.
