David Alfonso was the quintessential sportswriter, working at the Clearwater (Fla.) Sun and the Tampa Tribune. He spent the last 25 years fighting chronic lymphocytic leukemia, and he died in hospice in the last week. But not before writing his own obituary, a 30-inch novelette that was published Sunday in the Tampa Bay Times, which wrote a story about the obit on Monday.

Former Tampa Tribune sports reporter's last piece was his own obituary

Thank you for sharing.

I didn't know his work at all, but judging from his obit, he must have been a fine journalist and a wonderful person. RIP

I just read his obit, and I'm sitting here with tears in my eyes, and I never met the man (and I'm sorry that I didn't.)
