Drink up, losers

I'm not going to refute the data, because I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express. But the estimation of 20,000 deaths from a possible alcohol-related cancer pales when you realize 608,000 Americans died from all cancers in 2022.

And glancing at the study, you have to drink excessively (probably with several other mitigating factors) to increase your odds.

Lumping liquor in with lung darts and obesity is disingenious, when the real issue is what the stuff does to the rest of your body over time. Excessive drinking kills 178,000 Americans a year, or about the same as colon and prostate cancer combined. I'm surprised that "only" 42,000 people die from breast cancer per year, which is incredibly sad but much lower than I would have expected, given the amount of attention given to it.

Pancreatic cancer would rate No. 1 on my "f--- cancer" list because it's nearly undetectable until it's nearly too late and your five-year survival rate is 12 percent. Gwen's mom and uncle died of that, and I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy.

The surgeon general could do a lot better in emphasizing and funding research into pancreatic and why it seems to have both genetic and environmental factors.
