Running tennis thread 2025

A young potential star has made seismic waves in Miami -- and it isn't Andreeva (who got beat in the third round).

Alexandra Eala, a 19-year-old Filipino lefthander ranked No. 140, ousted No. 2 Iga Swiatek in straight sets today to advance to the semifinals. The win was her third in the tournament against a major champion (Jelena Ostapenko and Madison Keys were the other victims, along with 10th seed Paula Badosa), and she is now the first player from her nation to make the semis of a tour-level event. She;s jumped all the way to No. 75 in the live rankings.

Eala has been on the radar (not mine, but that of the experts) for awhile. She's won the U.S. Open junior title and has been moving steadily up the ladder. She's even appeared on the cover of Vogue Philippines.

Next she gets another top five player in the semis, No. 4 Jessica Pegula.

Well, Eala's run ended against Pegula, but she didn't go down without a fight -- it took three sets, the first of which Pegula won in a tiebreak.

Sabalenka won the tournament, beating Pegula 7-5, 6-2 in yesterday's final.

On the men's side, Djoker ain't dead yet. He'll play in today's final against 19-year-old Czech up-and-comer Jakob Mensik, who took out world No. 4 Taylor Fritz in three hard-fought sets in the semis.

Djokovic is gunning for his 100th tour-level championship (including the Olympics last year), third all-time behind Jimmy Connors (109) and Roger Federer (103), and his seventh Miami men's title, which would break a tie with Andre Agassi for most ever (Note: Serena Williams won eight Miami women's titles). He has also made a tournament final (again, counting the Olympics) for the 20th consecutive year, tying Federer's record.

Djokovic couldn't close the deal. Mensik beat him in straight sets — both went to tiebreakers— so Djoker is stuck at 99.
