It seems like every football game I get to second-guessing myself on how to keep stats when penalties are called. For holding, does the rushing attempt count? If so, is it from wherever the penalty is walked off?
Also, does a pass attempt count if a penalty is called?

If the penalty is marked from the original line of scrimmage or behind the line of scrimmage, it's no play. If it's marked from beyond the line of scrimmage, then the play counts.

Example:
Jones gains 5 yards, but the offense is penalized 10 yards for holding and the spot of the foul is 2 yards past the line of scrimmage. Give Jones a 2-yard run and the offense a 10-yard penalty.

Pass attempts don't count if the penalty negates the result of the pass play. For example, if a QB throws the ball incomplete but the defensive team accepts a holding penalty, the pass doesn't count. The same goes for a penalty on a completed pass if the line of scrimmage does not advance, such as described in the post above on a run.

Also, if a play occurs behind the line of scrimmage, mark off all the yards as a penalty. For example, if the running back runs up the middle for a yard or two but a hold way in the backfield brings the play back 13 yards, it's one penality for 13 yards, not a 10-yard penalty and a minus-3 rush.
