Do you have a passion for writing? Is your knowledge of sports great enough to provide readers with the in-depth coverage they crave? If so, you might be the next addition to the News-Sun sports department. The Hobbs News-Sun, a 10,500 circulation, six-day a week newspaper in Hobbs, N.M., is seeking a sportswriter to add to its award-winning staff. The News-Sun three-person sports staff covers five area high schools, as well as a junior college and an NAIA college. In a coverage area of 50,000 people, prep and small college sports are king, and we cover them accordingly. Teams in the coverage area, which include the nationally renowned Hobbs High School boys basketball program and junior college baseball power New Mexico Junior College, are competitive and regularly compete in the state playoffs in most sports. The successful applicant will be expected to write weekly features and columns, as well as provide strong insight and analysis on teams in his or her beat. Experience working with Quark Xpress is a plus. Experience at a weekly or small daily newspaper is preferred, but not required. This position is ideal for recent college graduates who are looking for experience and are willing to be an integral part of our ever-improving sports section.
Send cover letter, resume and clips to: Jon Roetman Sports Editor Hobbs News-Sun 201 N. Thorp St Hobbs, NM 88240 or E-Mail to sports@hobbsnews.com

you wouldn't be stupid enough to work for these ramen-level wages.

if you're passionate, you'll work for cheap. or so i'm told.

Not sure who left, but Roetman's a heckuva guy to work for and with. He's been SE at Hobbs for a couple years now and has improved the sports section quite a bit.

New Mexico JC does indeed have a strong baseball program, but it'll be under heavy sanctions next season as a result of a brawl in a regional tournament game. A shortened season and no postseason and no offseason contact between players and coaches. Can't imagine that'll do the program any favors.

If I'm not mistaken, they had to forfeit a region ngame to Grayson (Texas), and Grayson went on to win the Juco World Series.

Hobbs is a boil on Satan's taint, but I do remember the sports section being pretty good when I was around there.

Hobbs also has a "casino," a horse track and a really high murder rate!

That's because being in Hobbs makes you want to kill somebody.

on the bright side, there's no local sports coverage on wednesdays cuz it's church night.

I noticed they only publish 6 days a week? I guess they don't have a Sunday edition??
