how to handle when coach is star player's parent

I would mention it in the season preview story and call it good. During the season, if people want to know why you don't mention little Johnny is the coach's son, kindly refer them back to the season preview story.

Unless the last name is like "Smith" or something, I think it'd be worth mentioning more if the star player with the same last name is not related.

Ignore the mother's message.

This is not a big deal.

Hit on the mother and come back and tell us how it went. Otherwise it seems like overkill to mention the coach / QB relationship in every story. Since you are a local paper you have to assume that interested readers already know about the relationship.

i thought you weren't a journalist. if that, in fact, is true, why in the heck are you offering up your opinion?
why would a real journalist give two shirts about a non-journalist's opinion in this matter? i do believe this person came to a journalism board to get journalists' opinions.

Please attack JR in a similar manner.

not attacking anybody. just making a simple point. i believe boom has long pointed out, in broken english, that he is not a journalist and never has had a connection to journalism. why should his or her opinion on this manner matter?

Please make points to JR in a similar manner.

Maybe some journalists might benefit from hearing how their stories play with readers as opposed to other journalists. In the end it's the opinion of readers that will make or break a paper.

Maybe Norrin Radd is a journalist after all.
He's quick to deny blame like a typical mid-manager.

These two sentences don't go together, nor do they address a single thing I posted here.

Please attack JR in a similar manner. :D

no need to mention that in every story...in my mind it's not worth mentioning often at all.

I just had a kid go through three years as starting QB playing for his dad and mentioned their relationship in the last story I did during his high school career about him as a three-sport athlete.

Had a point guard play basketball for his dad for three years and it never needed to be mentioned.
