I First Feared the Message Board Was Us - SE Fired Over Posts

Moral of the story is that these message boards do far more harm than good. And be careful what you post.

How about don't publicly rip your employer, even anonymously.

Even better.

for the sake of argument, the sentence (that he apparently edited, but got quoted) in question could be read differently. he seems to be talking broadly about the industry, not his douchebag bosses, and perhaps about corporate "flacks" rather than forks. either way, perhaps a good riddance scenario -- i personally have no interest in working for the scoundrel corporate fork machine either.

Here's the line pulled from the original thread:
"But you must understand that we are all handcuffed by money-hungry corporate f***ks who want to run newspapers as a business rather than an essential part to maintaining a free-flowing democracy."

There have been a couple people fired for posting here or on the old Sportspages board.

Posting on any fanboard is a recipe for disaster. Those people can bait writers like world champions and the next thing you know, you're in a situation like this guy...
True but this guy just put the revolver to his temple and pulled the trigger without being prodded to do so.

For him to say "this place finally came back around to bite me in the butt" shows he doesn't have much of a clue. He did this to himself. If he's not willing to take responsibility for his actions, it probably won't be the last time something like this happens to him.

It's the employment equivalent of getting drunk and driving your car into a pole, then sitting back while surveying the wreckage and saying, "beer finally came back around to bite me in the butt"

When I first started out I vowed not to post on a fanboard anywhere mostly because I didn't want anything read the wrong way in terms of bias. But obviously there are much more important reasons not to do so. That was before social networking was even an issue. It amazes me how many professional journalists post on these types of forums, comment on stories (sometimes their own), and spout off on any number of outlets. I know you have to kind of sell yourself and the product these days but it's such a fine line. I'm not in the biz right now, but I'd be leary of almost any kind of footprint other than my actual product.

I've said some very nasty stuff about some of my PAST employers.

Some stuff I don't like goes on at my current joint, but I never go into details.

Baseline-level common sense.

If you think this, why do you post here?

I think that, and I post here.

Simple rule of thumb: Do not post anything that you wouldn't be willing to tell your boss face-to-face. Because that could very well be what you're doing.

I also agree with Mark2010. But neither of us posts what he posts.

Oh, you all get too touchy about that anyway.

Ever think he's just trying to get a rise out of you?

I would like to think he really feels that way, as opposed to not feeling that way at all and just posting stuff for the pathetic goal of getting a rise.

And if management gets too touchy about message board postings, that could become a zero-person sports department.

Somebody trying to get a rise out of somebody? On this board? The heck you say!
