After 48 years at the P-D, Thomas is retiring. Most of us realize how good Jim was at covering the NFL, but his transition from that to the NHL showed how versatile he is. Wish him all the best.

In a related development, Norm Stewart had no comment.

heck yes. I was skeptical when the Rams left town and they moved him over to the Blues beat when Jeremy Rutherford went to The Athletic, but he made the transition look downright seamless.

Had only a few dealings with him, but he was a gentleman and consummate professional.

Wish him only the best.

Here's an oddity. One of the beat writers covering the L.A. Rams was Jim Thomas of the Daily Breeze. When the Rams moved to St. Louis, their new beat writer was Jim Thomas of the Post-Dispatch.

Jim was the Mizzou writer for the P-D when I was in school. Well, he and Vahe. Both great guys from my limited interaction with them.

Norm probably doesn't know any Detroit folks these days who could take care of Thomas' kid.

Excellent career by Jim. I'm not sure I met him, but I read him often and covered enough in St. Louis to see him and understand his skills and longevity. At some point, the last of the old-school newspaper beat writers will be gone and it will be a sad day.
