Multiple dead at Fort Hood after shootings

What I thought was interesting -- other than the shooter's name and motivation -- is the civilian cop who shot him after being shot herself.

So here you have an Army base filled with people and weapons the person who stops the shooter is a female civilian police officer who responded from off the base and shot him after being wounded herself.

She may have saved a lot of lives.

I was listening to an interview with a military officer yesterday and he mentioned that soldiers do not carry weapons while on post at domestic bases unless they are MPs. He said the only time you are armed is when you check weapons out for training.

I didn't realize that but it would explain why it was a cop who took the guy down.

It also pretty much kills Small Town Guy's argument.

Gee, It is really a surprise that a crackpot who lost his mind and shot up a military base is an Arab......

And I'm still waiting for some slobbering anti-gun whiner to start the "you see, if they didn't have guns on military bases then this wouldn't happen!!" routine. :

Doesn't it also lay waste to the slobbering pro-gun belief that if you just arm everyone - say, every college student - these kind of things would be prevented, either because the killers would be so afraid of trying it or someone would take him out in the early moments?

And considering how many lone wacko gunmen of the past 25 years have been "Arab" - compared to those who have been lonely white guys - yeah, it might be a bit surprising.

Soldiers who witnessed the shooting rampage at Fort Hood that left 13 people dead reported that the gunman shouted "Allahu Akbar!" before opening fire, the base commander said Friday.

Lt. Gen. Robert Cone said officials had not yet confirmed that the suspected shooter, Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, made the comment, which is Arabic for "God is great!" before the rampage Thursday, which left 30 people wounded, including the gunman.

Some folks have a pretty bizarre picture of what an Army post is like. People aren't all running with their M-4s and having live-fire exercises on every other block. These bases are like a mix between a college campus and a small town -- a very safe small town. The hardcore training is done in remote parts of the post (if it's one of the large ones) or somewhere else entirely. Nobody is walking around armed to the teeth and foxholes aren't set up in front of every building.

It makes perfect sense that the soldiers were caught off guard and defenseless when this happened -- there's strong gate security at these posts to check who gets in. And they would obviously never expect one of their comrades to pull this shirt.

I'd love for you to explain to me who my "crew" is as I'm fairly certain that "my crew" has never been in charge.

He said if it were a white guy like Tim McVeigh, the media would be all over this, that the media is sweeping this under the rug because the guy is a Muslim, that Obama showed no leadership by not going off script in whatever speech he was making at the moment, that if he were an investigator, he'd want to know what Mosque the guy attended.
