Mayall was an active musician until his death at age 90. John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers were incredibly influential. So many fine players came up through his band, even through the twilight of his career. John McVie, Eric Clapton, Peter Green, Jack Bruce, Mick Taylor, Mark-Almond, many others. More recently Carolyn Wonderland.

His Wiki page is an intro to British Blues.

Clapton on the loss of his old friend and mentor. The Clapton "John Mayall and his Bluesbreakers" is the only record of his most of us own, but he put out a ton of good music and really left his mark on the blues music he so loved.

Mick Fleetwood was also a member of the Bluesbreakers, which is how of course he met McVie.

Fleetwood Mac's new direction with the departure of Peter Green and Bob Welch and addition of Buckingham and Nicks is among the great transformations of all time.

Right up there with Exile and Everlast. :)
