RIP Sam Rubin, the nicest guy in entertainment journalism

This one hurts. I had the good fortune of producing hours of TV with Sam as the talent. He must have liked my work as he was directly responsible for two of my subsequent gigs. Sammy was a remarkable man who never for a moment forgot how fortunate he was to have his jobs. He was always good humored, quick to rib us in the booth or on the stage, yet equally self-effacing.
Man, what a loss to Hollywood.

I got the news from this freshly posted YouTube clip. The newsman had trouble getting through the initial announcement, which is completely understandable. It's got to be impossible to have to break the news on camera of a colleague's death like that.



Because I lived in the Santa Barbara area, I didn't have a lot of opportunities to see Rubin's work, but some stuff would come out nationally or on YT. It's kind of a shame that a lot of people will know him only for that time he confused Samuel L. Jackson with Laurence Fishburne. RIP

I remember when the KTLA Morning News started in the early 1990s and Sam was on there. It was different, off-beat and funny. Him, Carlos Amezcua, Barbara Beck. Mark Kriski on weather.
