The strange saga of Wendy McCaw's ownership, as well as a 155-year-old newspaper, looks to have come to an end. The paper's parent company (essentially McCaw) filed for bankruptcy on Friday, and the managing editor sent out an email saying they didn't have the money to pay anyone.

Of course, all the controversy at the paper, punctuated by a mash walkout in 2006, has been discussed on this site. For those who need a little primer, here are some main threads we had:

EDIT: I see Mr. X has also posted a thread, moderators can combine the two if you like.

You can't help but wonder what's next for news consumers in Santa Barbara. The Indpendent is weekls, but feeds the web daily. In reality, one TV station. In better times for this industry, we'd talk about the Times or maybe San Luis Obispo swooping in.

And, darn it, does Wendy have any idea scholarships she's costing kids?

Santa Barbara County has a population of about 446,000. My understanding is that man of them are affluent, older retirees who can afford the place. I would think that it would be one of the last place to lose a daily newspaper.

I realize the Santa Barbara paper was totally mismanaged but it makes me wonder how much longer other small town papers have/
