The introduction to this piece, written by Tom Verducci, is, in its entirety, a disclaimer.

It is an explanation of how imprecise and fungible these choices are, and of the weird marriage of art and science baseball brokers in the American heart and mind, and of how the very design of the photo illustration is meant to stimulate argument.

The picture is an occasion for debate.

That great African-American and Latin players are underrepresented is a perfectly valid observation.

In fact, it's a hanging rhetorical curveball.

Scoop swings.

And misses.

You post better than Scoop writes.

Hell, that's not saying much. Even d_b posts better than Scoop writes
We have now reached an all-time low...

There was a bottom to this barrel?
Who knew?

It's a stupid column, but to say he accused anyone of racism would be an exaggeration at the least.

Really?

What would you call this:

"There are two others, and it's interesting -- funny in an oversensitive, cryptic, culturally paranoid type of way -- how both were not chosen for the picture. Or the corresponding roster.

I'm talking about Satchel Paige and Roberto Clemente.

How did two of the game's greatest players at their positions (or any position) and ambassadors of baseball -- and their influence on the influx of minority contributions to the game -- get so conveniently overlooked? How does this happen to those two particular players who are larger than life, bigger than the game, but doesn't happen to the only other one?

The one who meant the same to one set of people that the other two meant to their people?

Is it that obvious? Are we supposed to be that oblivious?"

I would call it painful to read.

Page 2 will really be worth reading when "Baby Momma or ex-wife?" gets there...

I would tell Scoop ya'll talking about him - but he's toooo busy to be bothered.

Not that you care, Scoop, but you spelled y'all wrong.

Now, now. Cut the man some slack. Those four-letter words are tough to spell correctly.

I still can't believe someone would ask that as an interview question. Essentially making light of a huge, huge problem in the black community.

Re: Scoop Accuses SI of Racism

By the way, did anyone see Scoops newest column where he asked which McNabb? The early season one or the one who lost to New Orleans? How can someone write that column after one subpar game by someone who was doing so amazing? Maybe if McNabb had a string of bad games, he could write something to that effect. Here it is: http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=jackson/061016
And this is when the skepticism about Donovan McNabb will begin to take its toll and affect him for the rest of the season.
Sorry Scoop, you're the only one who is wondering if one bad game will affect him at all.

He also said that McNabb was better than Manning (and according to his column, so did the guys on ATI (I didn't watch.)) It is beyond me how 8 years of outplaing McNabb could be erased after 6 games.

how did McNabb have a bad game? threw for 247 yards and two touchdowns with one interception on a Hail Mary from 70 yards out as time expired at the end of the first half

Is ATI that ESPN show, Around The Interruption?
