sick-out in Fall River?

I'm just a high plains guy, but curses to AP for always omitting Fall River from the NBA and NHL standings.

Lived in Boston for 33 years. Never set foot in Fall River. Could find it thanks only to Mapquest.

News-siders are totally ignorant about sports. I can't imagine them editing sports copy and knowing details that dedicated sports copy editors would know.

No, not all news-siders are ignorant about sports; some of the best news-side people I've worked with have come from sports desks.

There was a book about the high school boys basketball team at Fall River that was supposed to be the basketball equivalent of Friday Night Lights. Didn't read it all, but got the impression it's pretty working-class to working poor up there.

yeah, i don't know this david scott guy but to actually think that because you used to be a sport copy editor you'd change "lemnios" or a variation to "chelios" is assinine.

Talked to a friend who said he's heard nothing there about a "sick out." He also said it is his understanding that Gatehouse is better to its employees than JRC was and that while there might be some belt tightening there, it won't affect editorial.

1. How can it NOT affect editorial when staffers are being taken off the pro beats and copy editing is being done by a universal desk? In the case of Brockton, their readers will have to now read writers from Quincy with whom they're not familiar (although some would count that as a blessing). News-siders are totally ignorant about sports. I can't imagine them editing sports copy and knowing details that dedicated sports copy editors would know.
2. By the way, to the guy who never heard of Fall Rivers, are you serious? It's a large city in the Southeast corner of Mass.

I am serious. Have you ever heard of Spokane or Merced or countless other cities in the West that are large? Take your east coast snarkiness and shove it.

I agree with happygirl, I once had a news-sider help me edit Saturday morning's paper with Friday night prep football stories in it. The news editor didn't have a clue about AP sports style and changed "9-yard touchdown run" to "nine-yard touchdown run." When I saw the paper the next morning I decided then and there not to accept help any longer from the news side. May news-siders rot in heck.

I'm slightly amused to see everyone take David Scott's piece as gospel. He's been run down pretty good on this very board but now his word is gold? I like reading Scott and always assume that if he has an axe to grind or a dog in the fight that he makes that conflict of interest very clear. I'm just amused to see him used here (on the J-board) as a primary source.

Scott has a handle on this Gatehouse thing. What he wrote is spot on, and there's more that he didn't write. The thing about universal desks and unfilled positions and editorial people filling two jobs is spot on. And, no, I don't want some news editor who's never edited sports copy editing my copy. That's not denigrating their skills, just their sports knowledge.
And can we please get off this Fall River thing? OK, so not everyone knows where Fall River is. My bad, but it's irrelevant to the topic.

you're the one who made it an issue, fall rivers girl.

Like I said, Tom: My bad. Thanks for properly rebuking me and pointing out my typing error. Got anything to add to the subject of this thread, Gatehouse?
