Are you passionate about sports? Are you all about delivering the stories of standout players to a community that embraces its local athletes?

If so, the Brownsville Herald, a daily newspaper owned by AIM Media Texas, seeks an energetic and organized sports editor in the state's Rio Grande Valley region.

The ideal candidate is enthusiastic, understands the value of community journalism, embraces social media and can bring fresh ideas to the table. They will need to be well-versed in page design and have the ability to inspire a staff of two full-time reporters and one part-time reporter. Candidates should have five years experience in the journalism field.

The Brownsville-Los Fresnos-Port Isabel area loves its sports, mainly of the high school, boxing and soccer varieties. High school sports are covered extensively, and the Herald -- along with the sports departments of the Valley Morning Star (Harlingen) and The Monitor (McAllen) -- contributes to RGVSports.com, our high school sports website. The three sports staffs also assist in the production of RGVSports.com The Magazine, a quarterly high school sports publication.

Regionally, there has been some exciting news recently. Space-X has selected Cameron County's Boca Chica Beach as the site of a rocket launch pad, and, in 2015, the University of Texas at Brownsville will merge with the University of Texas-Pan American to form the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley. Herald associates also are a short drive from both South Padre Island and Mexico.

The Herald offers its employees a competitive salary and benefits. Fluency in Spanish is a big plus.

Interested candidates can send a cover letter, resume and work samples to Bryan Read, News Director, at The Brownsville Herald, 1135 E. Van Buren, Brownsville, TX 78520. You can also email your resume and clips to bread@brownsvilleherald.com. For more information, call (956) 982-6621.

The Herald is an Equal Opportunity employer. Non-U.S. citizens wishing to apply for a position must already be in possession of a valid work visa and other appropriate documentation.

How important is fluency in Spanish? To be honest I have none, but everything else you've asked for

Not very important. It helps, obviously, when dealing with the public at times, but those times are few and far between. There's usually someone else on the desk to help out in those instances.

No tengo fluencia en Espanol, pero me encanta hablar la lengua.

Looks like this is open again

Does anyone know if this job is open again or if it hasn't been filled since September (original post). And does anyone know why the job remains unfilled, or keeps opening up?

I interviewed for this position the last time it was open and got fairly deep in the process before having to pull out due to a personal issue that hindered a cross-country move. Everything I encountered with the staff there was positive , there were no red flags about the job, and no one should be scared away from the position just because it posted again.

Seems to have some turnover

This job was just posted again at the JournalismJobs website. I can't believe they would have gone this long without being able to fill it.

Anyone know what's up with this job? I went through the interview process with them before and it seemed like a class act place.
