Thoughts and Prayers: The Religion Thread

I watched the movie Conclave just Friday night. It was pretty good.

The online comments about Francis are quite vile.

There are half a dozen movies or teevee series dealing with papal conclaves to some extent.

Shoes of the Fisherman
The Two Popes
The Young Pope
The New Pope
Godfather III
Conclave

and many more, I'm sure...

I'm not a doctor of course and I haven't stayed in a Holiday Inn in 20 years, but this doesn't sound good:

Pope Francis in critical condition with early kidney failure but remains alert as prayers pour in

Adding kidney failure to the respiratory problems he had already sounds like a cascade failure situation starting to develop.

I've chewed out Papa Francesco on a number of topics, but he's been an improvement over Benedict, and he's probably worlds better than most potential replacements.

I didn't realize Francis has been Pope for nearly 12 years. It doesn't seem that long.

I know he's worked to stack the deck with more progressive cardinals, but given the state of this hellscape world I'm bracing for some old facsist fossil to take the wheel. Seems weird for a Protestant to worry about, but the world needs a counterbalance to unchecked authoritarianism right now.

Hopefully Francis can hang on for a while — I say this as a Catholic and as someone who's on the desk at my shop today.

But when he does die, count on Drumpf to say something stupid and/or gloat about his death. Catholic voters already gave him what he needed.

The pope's health looks dire for sure. But it was dire for Jimmy Carter for a year, so it's impossible to know anything.

I just saw "Conclave" so I guess when the time comes, anything can happen. And while it does seem like Francis should have a successor in his line of thinking, I'm not so sure that will happen.

If there's a successor, Steve Bannon will have him whacked.

"Whaddya think? Should I be Pope? Pope Donald I. I like the sound of that? The fake media will say you gotta be Catholic, but I don't know. I heard that's not true anymore."

He'll make some snarky remarks along with his utterly unwanted advice as to what kind of successor he wants -- maybe specific names, if Bannon has his way.
