Using MySpace to contact players?

i'm not a reporter any more but i think anyone who thinks myspace is an inappropriate method of contacting sources is a little behind the times. kids have myspace profiles. it's not an intrusion to use their page to contact them.

Leo's right. (I'm young.) I don't know any young person who'd think a reporter was creepy for sending them a Facebook message. Many, also, have read those post-VT tragedy stories (and others) in which posts on Facebook group "walls" are quoted at length. They know reporters are there and looking.

I know many high school athletes, who I have covered this year, that use MySpace or Facebook.

With that said, I don't think it's appropriate on my part or anyone's part for that matter to bother them. I don't think they would like it if I pester them. If I want to talk to them, I talk to them after the game by asking the coach's permission. That's the professional way to go about it.

I have a lot of the athletes I cover on my Facebook contact list, and often times I get faster answers there than I would trying to track them down other ways. I don't think any of them think I'm creepy either — but then, I'm young enough that Facebook, MSN, and such are common for people my age. I do wonder if someone who is 50 would have the same success and comfort level as I do.
