UVA and the alleged frat rape - Rolling Stone backpedals

Rape > journalism

It's who we are as a society.

OK great. That's a good thing.

Can problematic "impact journalism" > fake gang rape?

Why do journalists and/or people in power think the end result of this is that rape victims will not be believed in the future?

By minimizing the major errors in the RS story, we minimize the real problem. The problem is "impact journalism". The problem is reporters who want to "make a difference" and write a story before they look for the "facts" to back up the narrative they have already conceived.

Why don't we increase our efforts to stop this kind of journalism? Why isn't that the takeaway? Why aren't we discussing this?

It's a disservice to journalism and the readers for journalists to insist that the big problem here, that we need to focus on like a laser -- to the disregard of any other problem -- is rape culture.

As for your first question, maybe because women already have a difficult time getting people to believe them?

As far as the rest of it, which is worse, a woman being raped, or a forked up journalism story?

Gang rape is routine in at least to instances:

1 - as the initiation process of street gangs (http://www.ngcrc.com/ngcrc/proffem2.htm)

2 - as the initiation process of prostitutes

But, the victims in most of these cases are either minorities and/or girls from broken homes, who have other problems/issues

The fact that it appears - at quick glance - that most of the victims are prostitutes is partial confirmation of my intuition that rape, including gang rape, is like most crimes with a victim, in that the offender rationalizes to himself that the target deserved it. That it was a morally defensible act. Dostoevsky had it nailed.

You know who else does?

Falsely accused criminal defendants.

For a few, sure. Thanks to you and pw2, Kenny Tran's making extra coin with all these clicks on 2 threads about it.

But let's be real: no one gives a shirt.

Now if you'll excuse me I have to go complete the "Which '70s Rock Band Are You" quiz.

Kenny Tran is out. Jeff is in. We're making him coin.

And, I can't believe Kenny didn't put it out there for public auction. Between me and 3OF, we could have put together a consortium to buy the place, and revive the politics thread.

Hopefully Jeff will think of us when he bails on the place.

Yeah. And, without a fake story in RS, that falsely implicated a number of students in systematic gang rape, we'd never talk about this.

And that's what trials are for. Put the accusers out there and let the jury decide.

Jesus.

Should Drew, Armpit, and Blanket go on trial just because they were accused?
