I either read this here or on Reddit, but the question was posed to vets or people who work in a vets office what advice they would give to pet owners, and I will never forget this response - when you bring and pet in to have them put down, stay with your pet. It's tough, but you owe it to them.

They said no pet should end their life alone in a strange room looking for their human. They said every single one does it when their human leaves.

Double fork. It still gets dusty in here when I think about not having had the chance to say goodbye to my dog.

The stories within this thread are why I do what I do now. The portrait sessions for dogs I know are terminally ill are the hardest but most special - and I am humbled by the love and grace the humans show during the brief time we're all together. Each dog that enters my realm and allows me and my lens a smile, a wag, a head tilt helps me heal a little from the heartbreak of losing my soulmate Shep. It will be seven years this August and I still miss him, no matter how big a paw print Bella has stomped all over my world.
