Full-time Sports Writer needed at The News-Dispatch (Michigan City, IN)

The job is, in reality, more of an assistant sports editor position. Looking for someone with some experience and also strong leadership qualities. This is not the same position that was advertised earlier in 2013. That person is still here and doing very well.

The Sports Boy mails in another bucketload of bull$#$#

I happen to like Simmons quite a bit. Not every one of his columns strikes a cord with me, but I can't think of any writer who does. If you don't like him, stop clicking.

next time, just completely park in his space. If you're going to get scolded, there may as well be a reason for it.

    Everything I write is terrible

What I really hate is when I produce what I feel is a kick-ass story, on deadline, and then read the next morning and find a really stupid mistake. Something really dumb like "John" instead of "Jon." That just forks up everything for me.

    Everything I write is terrible

I actually think I suck. I'm not even sure why I'm still employed. Maybe that's overdoing it, but sometimes I really do feel that way. But every now and then I'll get a complement from a co-worker or some random reader that makes me feel better. It's actually a feeling I need to get over, and...

    Advice re: prep basketball coach

Sounds to me like maybe he doesn't want the spotlight shining too brightly on his program. You have a right to be suspicious. Sorry, but a comment is necessary: Don't do e-mail interviews. You said you're still a kid in this world, so there's a piece of advice for you. Take the time to talk to...

    Thoughts on the movie "Babel"?

I enjoyed it, but don't really understand all the pre-Oscar hype. The stuff with the deaf-mute was a little strange. I heard a lot of comparisons to Crash, which I feel is 100x better. It definitely wasn't one of the five best movies I saw this year.

    Style question for the old-timers

To me, simply because saying "Coach joked" is shorter than saying Coach said, jokingly. Maybe that's not good enough a reason, but my best journalism professor always told me when presented with two ways to say one thing, pick the shorter one. but like I said, I'm not one to allow implied...

    Style question for the old-timers

The only exception to said that I'll allow in my writing or others is joked when it's necessary to imply the coach/player was joking or being sarcastic. For instance, after a local team neededn 11-point rally in the final minutes to win the game, I asked the coach about the comeback. The quote...
