    The successor to BASW

BASW is quite possibly the only sports-related entity that hasn’t misspelled my name!

Deadspin editor quits, blasts G/O management

I think this is an oddly and overly narrow view of what Deadspin offered and what people enjoyed about it.

Is it time to get rid of cheerleaders and ice girls?

Leaving this here as my contribution: http://www.sportsonearth.com/article/76061588/nfl-cheerleaders-exploitation-lawsuits-for-working-rights-minimum-wage

    The Ray Rice Elevator Video

Agree with the above. Only things that really matter are: (a) the CBA, which was a huge and lucrative victory over De Smith and the PA; (b) the TV money, which keeps going up and up. Goodell got a $25 million-ish raise after the CBA kicked in. I think the owners are pretty happy with him.

Sports on Earth writers and editors laid off

All, Very interesting thread. Both on SoE and the economics and state of our profession in general. Thanks for the kind personal words, and thanks for reading and caring about SoE. I can't offer any meaningful information or insight regarding the site's inner workings or top-level corporate...

Howard Bryant takes over ESPN magazine back page from Chris Jones

Agree with all of the above. Also important to note that places like ESPN and Esquire can give an enterprising, dogged journalist something better than a recognizable credential and a foot-in-the-access-door -- they can give you the time, freedom and security to pursue difficult, risky...

Completely agree. Excellent insight on all counts.

Best writers to read for a young writer

I liked the craft discussions. I especially liked them when they involved something I had written, because I learned a lot and hopefully improved the next time out.

    Point taken.

RTDNA poll results determine best journalism school

Agreed. I often told my students that journalism was simply ahead of the overall American economic curve.

    Pop Warner participation drops

Published a feature on this topic today. A long one. And still couldn't fit in much of what I wanted to cover. Really complex topic, both in terms of science and ethics. I can say with a lot of confidence that there is never going to be a magic breakthrough helmet. I can also say that the two...

    Borrowing story ideas

In the cases I've seen a local story and written something national, I always do two things: 1. Build upon or expand the story so that I'm not just recycling - and I mean REALLY build and expand; 2. Acknowledge the work done by the writer of the idea source material, either via link, mention...

    The 10,000-hour rule

David actually just took a job at ProPublica. But I share the love. He's awesome. His skill is a real gift. Book is fantastic and shockingly easy to read and digest without being trite. Did a podcast with him recently, he talks about the 10,000-hour rule and other stuff...

Plagiarism or coincidence? Writer, Wall Street Journal square off

What really stinks is how uninformed Sam Walker - the sports editor of a major national journalism operation - appears to be about the issue of brain trauma in football, which is only one of the biggest sports stories of the decade. Not everything fits into political/philosophical meta-narratives.

I, for one, welcome our new overlords (from ESPN)

I recently wrote about everything that's being discussed here - and moreover, the Atlantic writer who penned the article in the first post was one of the people I spoke to while reporting. Derek Thompson. Pretty sharp. He's been writing good stuff on ESPN, bundle pricing, etc. for a while. His...

NCAA looking into Manziel profiting from autographs

That's true for a huge number of people in society and they are not subject to amateurism.

NCAA looking into Manziel profiting from autographs

No, I don't know that. Nor do I agree. When you say "technically," I have no idea what you are referring to. If you'd like to explain how there is not, in fact, a marketplace for men's college basketball and football talent, please do. I'll listen.

NCAA looking into Manziel profiting from autographs

That's nonsensical. When and where has anyone argued for a basic right to play college football? Amateurism is college sports is collusion. As a society, we generally hold that marketplace competitors do not have a right to collude, and that individuals have a right to not be subjected to said...

NCAA looking into Manziel profiting from autographs

Why does it need to be regulated? Honest question.

NCAA looking into Manziel profiting from autographs

I very much disagree that the restriction going on via amateurism is guaranteeing the opportunity of many. As such, I think you're setting up a false choice between having and eating cake. Can you elaborate on and substantiate why you believe this?
