18 dead in shooting in Lewiston, Maine

Let's get him to bang the drums for gun control and see some pretend tough guys react.

Anyways, what a person.
Definition of heroism.
As to whether he'll become an advocate for gun control, I wouldn't bet on it. Even if he supports gun control, going public with his views will subject him to even more misery. Trumpist gun nuts will make sure of it.

OK, I'll play Devil's Advocate.

The Fourth Amendment. Having lost its protection for four years I feel pretty strongly about it. The Fourth keeps law enforcement from violating our civil rights. These types of situations are made even more horrific by admissions after the fact that authorities had prior knowledge of possible intention but no way of preventing the shooter from acting because we believe in the guarantees that the Constitution provides.

What can the sheriff do in this specific instance? No judge in their right mind -- except for the dumbass in the Kansas newspaper case -- would sign off on a search warrant without something more solid than "we have reason to believe based on his family and commanding officer." The sheriff could send a deputy to said suspect's house but suspect has the right to no illegal search and seizure, and no arrest without probable cause -- i.e., actual evidence of a crime.

The process of getting someone involuntarily detained for mental health requires due process as well. You can't just throw a straightjacket on anyone, even if you invoke the "imminent danger to self and others" provision.

I hate it for the families of the 18 people killed but let's not deflect the blame from the person ultimately responsible for their deaths.
